Frank Shorter's Secret to Success
How did Frank Shorter go from average college runner to the 1972 Olympic Marathon champion?
He discovered the secret to success.
Here is Shorter detailing the secret:
“For all we know about running theory — and, believe me, there are no secrets — we don’t know very much. I like it that way because I truly enjoy exploring the limits of fitness for myself. I like the idea that there is much to learn — about oneself as much as training theory — because one of the greatest challenges of my life has been to train myself to run at my best. Though competing well is the goal and what people associate me with, I’m more interested in the process than in the result. I’m not obsessed with competing or with winning. What I am obsessed with is training; I know that if I’m trained well, I’ll compete well. My running goals are really training goals. Give me several month of unimpeded training and I’ll be my happiest.
I train hard. But I never felt I was training too hard. You have to “know your body.” It’s part of the beauty of the training process, and once you’ve determined how much your body and mind can take, you can then begin to reach your potential.“
The secret to success is simple: Love the process.
