The Benefits of Training Partners

Good training partners are a real asset.

Antagonistic training partners can be a nuisance and a hinderance.

In any relationship with training partners, it is important to remember not to compete with each other in practice. I cannot emphasize this point strongly enough. Save competition for race day. In training, training partners do everything they can to make those around them better knowing all will improve greater because of it.

No matter the ability of your training partners, as a runner improves fewer and fewer may be able to keep pace on long runs, track sessions, and race day. This is when the phrase, “The loneliness of the long distance runner,” becomes a reality. This is the price one pays for getting better.

But training partners are much more than those who share fast, long, or hard miles. The best ones never withhold encouragement in trying times, offer comfort in disappointment and readily share in celebration of achievements. And this connection between training partners can never be outgrown.
