Link of the Day: Video — Monitoring Athlete Training Loads: The Hows and Whys

Professor Carl Foster is the Director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin — La Crosse. He’s made several contributions to the exercise & physiology body of knowledge, but is perhaps best known for his work on Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE).

RPE has proven study after study to be the most accurate benchmark for how hard an athlete is working in practice and competition. I use it with my athletes. It’s practical, easy to use, and works well.

Today’s link is a video of a presentation Prof. Foster gave at the Aspire Academy in Doha, Qatar in 2016. In it he reviews the fundamentals of RPE, why it works, and how to use it effectively in the monitoring of training loads and overall development of athletes .
